August, 1996. Cottage country, Ontario. The dog days of summer, when the black flies won’t quit and cicadas hum so loudly they swallow every other sound. At a remote lakeside cottage in the Kawarthas, Minnie, a sensitive and observant eight-year-old, carefully navigates the fragile emotional world of her depressed mother, who only rises from bed on the weekends when Minnie’s father comes to visit. For two brief days, the cottage fills with laughter and the illusion of a happy family. But when her father leaves again, Minnie’s mother retreats back into the darkness of her room, leaving Minnie to fend for herself. Lonely and afraid, Minnie feels it’s her responsibility to cheer her mother up so she tries everything she can think of to get her mother out of bed: costumes, magic tricks, even baking a pie. But when her attempts only seem to make things worse, Minnie’s hurt turns inward, with painful consequences.
